The beach west of Roanoke Point in Riverhead, Long Island is magnificent - but in trouble. In this blog I document the good, the bad and the ugly.

Reeves Landfill?
The more I work on this project of cleaning Reeves Beach (or at least the mile west of the Town public beach) the more it seems as if I'm dealing with a landfill rather than a normal beach. I realize that I'm contending with garbage dumped during the 26 years since the Town driving ramp was constructed. For obvious reasons (embarassment, imprisonment) people don't dump garbage in their own neighborhood, where they might be seen. But at night down this lonely stretch of beach no-one sees as you toss it out the window of your vehicle. The tragedy is that we all need, for our own sanity, to sometimes escape the crowd into a natural place. There's nothing more magical than a moonlit walk on the beach, though the magic soon disappears when a truck barrels by, or you trip over deep ruts, or a pile of trash.
