Disgusting

I took a large contractor bag and a kitchen bag down yesterday morning, intending to deal with the garbage I had to leave the previous day. However there was so much new garbage I filled both of them and will have to bring 2 more contractor bags down today. One area, just west of the shipwrecks,  had about 2 casefuls of empty beer bottles scattered around. I doubt very much that beach walkers lugged these all this distance! In fact beach walkers tend to be subtractors of garbage, not added. The garbage problem is inextricably linked to the driving problem, as all the other Towns on the North Shore have come to realize.

Reeves Landfill?

The more I work on this project of cleaning Reeves Beach (or at least the mile west of the Town public beach) the more it seems as if I'm dealing with a landfill rather than a normal beach. I realize that I'm contending with garbage dumped during the 26 years since the Town driving ramp was constructed. For obvious reasons (embarassment, imprisonment) people don't dump garbage in their own neighborhood, where they might be seen. But at night down this lonely stretch of beach no-one sees as you toss it out the window of your vehicle. The tragedy is that we all need, for our own sanity, to sometimes escape the crowd into a natural place. There's nothing more magical than a moonlit walk on the beach, though the magic soon disappears when a truck barrels by, or you trip over deep ruts, or a pile of trash.

I didn't run yesterday and today the trash I collected from the beach filled my bag to bursting:
